Questions regarding similarities to Gauntlet
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:39:28 PM »
So I've heard this game is similar to Gauntlet, which immediately caught my attention as i have fond memories of playing it back on the NES and it would be great to relive it in a modern fashion. I guess i just have a couple questions regarding difficulty. To any one that has played the NES version of gauntlet as well as Hammerwatch, Is Hammerwatch truly as daunting, difficult, and unforgiving as Gauntlet? Like for example, in Hammerwatch, does your health bar rapidly decrease over time, as it is also the timer for the game? If not, is there a way to turn it on? Any input would really be helpful, thank you.

While it certainly was inspired by Gauntlet, they aren't really that similar. There's no timer/score that ticks down like in Gauntlet, it is difficult but there's a lot of switches in the custom game section to make it easier and such!

Uhh... Mr Hipshot? I think he did not ask for things to be easy?

Now, I did not play Gauntlet, but: Actually, you CAN make life tick down in Hammerwatch. When you start a new game and click "custom", there are several options (called "challanges" in that menu) to switch on. The one you asked for would be "Reverse hp regen". Although I have no idea if it is actually possible to win then. For me it is difficult enough to just play it in hard mode.. though that may be, because I did not play that much yet (only played one class up to now, but relatively close to the end of the campaign, I believe).

Anyways, I honestly would not worry about the game being too easy.

edit: If you do end up buying the game: make sure to have a look at the advanced graphics options, I found them pretty neat^^)

Hey thanks for the input both of you. And yes Seth I did not ask for things to be easy haha XD rather, i asked for a mind- numbingly difficult game like the one ive grown to like so much. I am deffinitely interested in the Reverse hp regen, and even if it's not the same challenge level, it would be nice to have the same style of gameplay in a newer game. So thanks again, it looks like i'll be buying it.

Oh P.S. before someone corrects me on this, in my original post i said health/timer, but it's actually health/hunger. I just always thought of it as a timer since food is so scarce haha.

You're right it had a triple-purpose as a timer, hunger, and health.

Also, he didn't ask if it was easy, but Hipshot still answered the question.

If you like hard, this is your game, there are varying difficulties but Hard is very hard, and there are plenty of ways to make it harder with challenges.

I might have answered in haste anyway, if you want a hard game, this is it, play it on hard. It's ass.
