Newb needs help

Yo guys, I'm new to the game and forums.
Is there some kind of a game manual or an FAQ?

There are extra lifes to find. Does this mean I can be killed permanently in single player mode? If so, where can I see how many lifes I have left?

What are those gift boxes for? I can collect them but I don't know their meaning since there is no explanation or item/equip menu.

Most things are self-explayning and I really like this game so far. What I don't like is that you are thrown into without even knowing how the game works. I noticed some 'hint blocks' but, well that's it.

Also I don't know anything about these campaigns and all the settings. I feel kind of lost.

 Yes you can be killed 'permanently' in single player mode, but when you step on a checkpoint it saves the game, allowing you to reload from that point. At the top of the screen to the  center-right there should be a golden Ankh with a number next to it, that is the amount of lives you have left.

The presents are for a Steam achievement in which you need to collect 24 of them to acquire.

There aren't many settings besides the old arcard style ones and basic video settings, it's all about learning and conquering your obstacles (With secrets along the way).
